From Click to Print: A simple approach to Lighting

Join us for a personal hands on instructional workshop introducing you to the world of lighting.

From Click to Print is a unique approach to teaching the art of digital work-flow. By covering the FIVE P’s: Plan, Photograph, Process, Print and Post, we will develop a consistent game plan to tackle any project.

Skill Level: Beginner & Novice

Our simple approach to lighting will give you an understanding of HOW light behaves. This will allow any light to become a creative light source. From sunlight to ordinary home light bulbs, from small hotshoe flashes to large studio strobes, you will learn to take control of your images using the manual settings on your lights and camera. This specially deigned photography lighting workshop will help you focus not on the most expensive toys, but on simply using what you already have to get the shot you envisioned in your mind. There are times when more is better, but we’ll focus on the most practical method of lighting, both financially and for ease of use: learning to use as little gear as possible to achieve the desired effect. As you learn different techniques we will have multiple stations set up with different scenarios and lighting to let you practice what you just learned, let it really sink in, and find out what you need help with before you go home.

Subjects that will be covered in the class are:

Lesson 1: Tips on purchasing Lights (Flash units)

Choosing a brand of studio strobes is a similar process to choosing an SLR camera system. If you buy the wrong brand, you may have to scrap your entire investment as your aspirations grow. Understanding your options will help you make an informative decision.

Lesson 2: How to set up and trigger the flash

We will start with a blank set and build the lighting from scratch. Using softboxes, umbrellas and grids, we will learn how to control the light.

Lesson 3: Understanding Exposure

There are five key elements to produce proper exposure; ISO, Shutter, Aperture, Flash Power and Flash to Subject distant. Mastering these elements will take the guess work out of lighting..

Lesson 4: Metering the Light

Understand how to start with a base metering and tweak your settings for dynamic results.

Lesson 5: Live Studio shoot

It’s time to experiment! Using the knowledge you have learned, you will photograph models. We will be on hand to answer any questions.

Break

Lesson 6: Outdoor Lighting: Using off camera flash

Building on our knowledge of studio lighting, we will take the class outdoors to understand small battery power flashes.

Lesson 7: Live Outdoor shoot

It’s time to experiment again! Using the knowledge you have learned, you will photograph models outdoors. We will use small flash units combined with ambient light. We will be on hand to answer any questions.

Wrap up

<del datetime="2010-11-22T04:46:46+00:00">$295.00</del> $175.00 From Click to Print: A simple approach to Lighting

SPECIAL NEWS: First 5 paid attendees can stay for FREE in the 4 bedroom condo unit!

Five Day Vacation Workshop with Vanelli!

The vacation workshop is designed to be hands-on (Vanelli expects many hugs). All levels from beginners to advanced can attend. The fun starts at 5:00 pm on Monday, March 8th and drags on until sometime Friday, March 12th. If you need help deciding what to bring, visit the Survival Kit’s Packing List. Ritalin and earplugs are highly recommended.

The meeting room and living arrangements are one in the same. Yeah, it’s a lot of time to spend with Vanelli, so if you think you can’t handle it, contact us for other accommodation options. The 4 bedroom condo has 1 king bed, 2 queen beds and 2 single beds. Sleeping arrangements are first come, first serve. There is a grocery store and local shops within walking distance, and the condo features a full kitchen. Participants staying on-premises will have access to the resort amenities.

Although the workshop is structured, you will also have free time for vacation-type activities on your own if you wish. Vanelli will always be available (he never sleeps); Sandy will be available most of the time (she does sleep). Peer knowledge and advice will be plentiful with our group Breakfast Babble and Dinner Discussions.

Getting There

The closest airport is Norfolk International Airport 64 miles away. It’s about a 90 minute drive (that’s an hour and a half for all you non-mathematical types). It’s not that Vanelli’s driving skills are bad; it’s his ability to stay off the Android while driving that makes it scary to be a passenger, therefore, carpooling is not arranged or provided by Vacation With Vanelli. If you wanna talk to other participants about carpooling, send a shout and we’ll hook you up.

Detailed directions and the condo address can be found in the Survival Kit. Only paid participants have access. No party crashers allowed.

Helpful Hint:

When you arrive in Kitty Hawk, get out of the vehicle and listen for the sound of Vanelli’s voice. Follow that sound to the condo. Shouldn’t be hard to do.

Refund Policy: If you chicken out, your dough is refundable up to 30 days before the workshop (minus a $25 restocking fee). If it’s less than 30 days we will transfer your registration to a future workshop, or to a different victim.
